Rounders and Cricket 2009

Once more our Rounders and Cricket finals were blessed with lovely weather at St Edwards School Oxford. It was a very successful day , enjoyed by all the schools taking part as well as their supporters. The generous hospitality and welcome of  the School were very much appreciated.

Our thanks go especially to Mr Charlie Baggs for superbly masterminding the organisation of the day on behalf of the school for the last time having been involved for many years. The matches were played in a great spirit.

Rounders Report

Cheam School (also semi-finalists for the 2nd consecutive year) played Millfield Preparatory  School (runners up in 2008). Millfield Prep. School led by 8½ - 6½ after the first innings and then increased their lead to win comfortably by 20 –12.

Play-off for 3rd/4th place:

Cheam School played Windlesham House. After the first innings Cheam School were just behind 9½ - 10½, but they restricted Windlesham’s total in the 2nd innings and were then able to pass them before declaring, to claim 3rd place with a winning score of 15½ (d) - 15.

Final:

Both teams, Foremarke Hall and Millfield Preparatory School, displayed excellent skills in the Final with individual players being commended by the umpires for bowling, fielding, catching, throwing, batting and running. Only 1 rounder separated the teams after the first innings (6 – 7) but Foremarke Hall stepped up a gear and went on to take the trophy for the 1st time, by 17 – 12.

The Girl of the Match award went to Erica Sanders of Foremarke Hall for her all round play.

We were delighted that Mr Andrew Trotman, the Warden of St. Edwards, presented the medals, the trophy and player of the match awards before speaking about the value of JET (Joint Educational Trust), a charitable organisation, which helps children, who have suffered trauma or tragedy at home, to make a new start, by enabling them to attend a caring Independent School.

Cricket Report

Semi-Finals

Edge Grove versus Packwood Haugh – Winners: Edge Grove

Packwood Haugh batting first began well with Jackson scoring 7 from the first four balls. Unfortunately White fell to a corker from his namesake R. White from Edge Grove. H. Copley’s left arm over was very effective from the other end and Jackson misjudged an in cutter and Packwood were 13/2. Packwood made a good effort to reach 126/9 from their allotted 25 overs with Beard scoring 37 from 37 balls. R. White in reply with the bat for Edge Grove scored an impressive 68 from 34 balls including three sixes and nine fours before falling to a straight ball from Phillips. T. Jones carried his bat scoring 28 and D. Steward helped with an impressive 23 and Edge Grove reached their target of 127 with nine wickets to spare.

Cheam v St John’s on the Hill – Winners: St John’s on the Hill.

Cheam School having won the toss decided to bat and is often the case in important games got off to a slightly rocky start. St John’s were able to pick up wickets reasonably freely and pin back Cheam. S Owen from Cheam did well to score 22 and the batting team reached a modest score of 92-9 from their 25 overs. G Lewis for St John’s was perhaps the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 23 from his five overs. St John’s in reply with the bat followed a similar pattern to Cheam and lost wickets at a relatively quick rate although T. Smith did well to get a top score of 17. The game was very much in the balance although sensible batting helped St John’s keep their last wicket intact and reach 93-9 to win the game.

3rd/4th Play off

Cheam v Packwood Haugh:                                 Winners: Cheam

Cheam batting first lost their opener B. Woolfenden to the first ball although this only sparked commitment and they went on from there in great style. A 178 second wicket partnership between M. Kellock (43) and M. Arkwright (111) secured them an impressive 178-1 score at the end of the twenty five overs. Arkwright’s century was also Cheam’s maiden century at 1st XI level and left him with a stunning record of 401 runs in the JET competition this year with an average of 100.25. In reply Packwood Haugh’s openers, Jackson (32) and White gave early fright and got the score boards moving at a good pace. Upon their removal though Cheam took the upper hand and Kellock took four wickets and O. Brits three. Packwood finished on 108 all out, with Cheam winning by 71 runs.

The Final

Edge Grove versus St John’s on the Hill:        Winners: Edge Grove

Edge grove batting first got off to a great start with R. White going after the bowlers as he had in the semi-finals. Even though St John’s on the Hill managed to dismiss T. Jones early on for 5, R. White scored 87 and D Steward 34. St John’s took a number of late wickets with Monk finishing with 4 wickets. Edge Grove had however posted a formidable total of 167/8 by the end of their innings for St John’s to chase. In reply Edge Grove continued their excellent bowling with great work in the field and R.White took 3 wickets and Copley 1 wicket leaving St John’s on 47/6. Super bowling from M. Elworthy and excellent fielding restricted St John’s further who finished on 95 all out after a valiant effort to chase the total. Edge Grove won the final by 72 runs and were deserved winners on the day. R. White was named player of the tournament and in his 5 JET matches scored 470 runs with an average of 118.

Thank you to all the 58 schools that entered this year and very well done to the four schools that reached the Finals Day. Particular congratulations to Edge Grove School for becoming JET Cricket Champions 2009.
